Bombs jettisoned live 6 miles N.W. of Julich, due to heavy flak hitting starboard engine nacelle, from 18,000 ft at 0140 Hrs. Hazy, good visibility. Bombs seen to explode but no results observed. Tyre burst and made one wheel landing. About 20 minutes flight from target anti-aircraft shell passed through starboard engine nacelle, releasing the dinghy and puncturing the tyre. Aircraft began to vibrate and loss height. Bombs jettisoned and course set for base. On arrival, on advice from flying control, attempted to land on runway. Aircraft on touching down ran straight until the speed was lost and then turned to starboard and ran off runway. When aircraft stuck soft ground it slewed around and nosed over, breaking both propellers and the plexiglass in the bomb-aimer's position. Part C. General remarks (including any recommendation with regard to personnel, training, airframes, engines, accessories etc., and notes of any action taken as a result of this incident). A. Accident occurred in daylight at East Moor Airfield. B. Starboard tyre, punctured by flak, caused aircraft to swing on landing. C. Pilot on instructions from Officer i/c N.F. remained airborne until all aircraft had landed safely and then landed with undercarriage down. |
