Add New Photo
For each photo or image that you upload to your site, you must add a record of the photo here or via a GEDCOM import in order for it to be recognized by TNG.
Number of people, families or sources to link to this photo: Indicate here how many individuals, families or sources (or any combination of those) will be associated with this photo. For example, if the photo is a portrait of one person, leave
the number at 1. If it is a family portrait, however, enter the number of people in the portrait. If the photo is an image of a building or landmark, indicate how many people are in some
way touched or affected by the photo.
Modify Existing Photo
This section will allow you to find and make changes to an existing photo record. Any editing of the photo itself must be done on your computer.
Search for: Enter a keyword or phrase associated with the photo you want to modify. Multiple words will be treated as a single string of characters. The checkboxes
below this field indicate which sections of the photo records database will be searched for your word or phrase. To retrieve all photo records, leave this field blank.
Look in: This is a list of searchable sections of the photo records database. Place a check in the box next to each section (or field) you would like to have searched.
Links (Person or Family ID) refers to the ID numbers of the people or families linked to existing photos. If you check the box next to Exact match only, your search term will only return records
that match one or more of the checked items exactly in its entirety.
Sort Photos for an Individual, Family or Source
By default, photos linked to an individual, family or source are sorted by the order in which they were linked to the individual, family or source. To change that order, you must indicate a new order here.
Tree, ID: Enter the tree and ID of the person, family or source whose photos you want to sort. If you don't know the ID, click on the Find Person, Find Family or Find Source button next to this field.
After entering or retrieving an ID, click Continue to display the photos linked to this person, family or source and the current order in which they will be displayed with the record.
Generate Thumbnails
When you click on the "Generate" button under this option, TNG will automatically create thumbnail images for all photos that do not already have an existing thumbnail. By
default, the name of the new image will be the same as the larger image but with a prefix and/or suffix as defined by you in the General Settings.
NOTE: If you do not see the Generate Thumbnails section, your server does not support the GD image library.
New / Existing Photo Information
Image File to Upload: If your new photo has not yet been uploaded to your web site, click Browse and locate it on your hard drive.
If the photo is already on your site, leave this field blank.
File within photos folder: If you had previously uploaded your photo using FTP, enter the path and file name of your photo as it exists within the photos folder on your web site.
Alternately, you can click on the Select button to locate the file. If you are uploading
your photo now using the previous field, use this box to enter a path and file name for your file after it is uploaded. A suggested path and filename will be prepopulated for you.
NOTE: If you are uploading now, the directory you indicate here
must already exist and must be writeable by all. If not, use your FTP program to create the directory and give it proper rights (use the command CHMOD 777).
If you would like to link to an external image, enter the absolute path (for example, "http://www.thatsite.com/image.jpg") in this field and leave "Image File to Upload" blank. See below for
more details on this option.
Thumbnail Image File: Specify image/Create from original If your server supports the GD image library, you will see an option here to supply your own
thumbnail or to have TNG create it for you from the original. If you choose the latter, by default the name of the new file will be the same as the original, with a prefix
and/or suffix attached. This prefix and suffix, along with the max width and height of the thumbnail, are designated in the General Settings.
Thumbnail to Upload: When an individual's genealogy is requested, thumbnail images of each photo linked to the individual are displayed on the same page. If a thumbnail
image for your new photo has not yet been uploaded to your web site, click Browse and locate the thumbnail on your hard drive. You must then enter the
destination path and file name for the thumbnail image in the next field. If the thumbnail is already on your web site, leave this field blank.
File within photos folder: If you had previously uploaded your thumbnail image using FTP, enter the path and file name of your thumbnail as it exists within the photos folder
on your web site (hint: you could put thumbnails in a subfolder if you want them to be kept separate or have the same names as the larger images).
Alternately, you can click on the Select button to locate the file. If you
are uploading your thumbnail now using the previous field, use this box to enter a path and file name for your thumbnail after it is uploaded. A suggested path and filename will
be prepopulated for you. NOTE: If you are uploading now, the directory
you indicate here must already exist and must be writeable by all. If not, use your FTP program to create the directory and give it proper rights (use the command CHMOD 777).
Description: This should be short just a few words to identify your photo. It will be used as a link to the page displaying your photo.
Notes: Include more detail here if necessary, including information about who is pictured, when and where the photo was taken, etc. This will be displayed as a blurb
accompanying your short description link (see previous field).
Date Taken, Place Taken, Owner/Source: These are optional freeform fields. If you know this information, enter it in the appropriate areas.
Always viewable: Check this box if you want this photo to be displayed for the linked individuals, regardless of their living status and user permissions.
This image is a document: Check this box if this photo should be classified as a document (such as a scanned image of a certificate).
This image comes from an external source: Check this box if this image resides somewhere on the Internet other than on your server. You must supply
an absolute path (for example, "http://www.thatsite.com/image.jpg") in the field labeled "File within Photos Folder" (leave the "Image File to Upload" field blank), and
you must provide your own thumbnail if you wish to have one (TNG will not create one).
Link to individuals or families: Enter the ID numbers of the individuals or families you wish to associate with this photo. If you don't know the ID number, click Find Person...
or Find Family... to search for it.
You can also enter an "Alternate Description" and "Alternate Notes" for each link. If you supply anything here, the alternate description/note will be used with the photo when it is
displayed in conjunction with the linked individual or family instead of the main description/note entered above. If no alternate description or note is supplied, the
main description and note will always be used.
Make Default: To use the thumbnail for this photo on the pedigree chart and at the top of other pages related to the individual to whom the photo is being linked,
check this box.
Image Map: To link different portions of your photo to different pages, or to display short messages when the mouse pointer is over those portions, enter the needed
image map code in this box. To construct your own image map, see the Image Map Construction section at the bottom of the page.
Image Map Construction
For each region you want to link to an individual, first select the individual's tree, then select a shape (circle or rectangle) for the region (more complex shapes are possible,
but you must supply the code for those). Next, select the dimensions of your chosen shape (radius or width and length), then click on the image where the center of the region should be.
A "Find..." box will be displayed. Enter all or part of the individual's name to locate possible matches, then choose the correct individual from the candidates displayed. The box
will close and the code for this region will be added to the Image Map box above. You may edit that code if necessary.
Repeat this process for any additional regions needed. All new code will be added to the end of that already in the Image Map box.
Select Photo and Action
Locate the line in the table that describes the photo you wish to modify. Next, click on one of the possible actions listed at the left of that line. To change some or all of the
information regarding this photo, choose Edit. To permanently remove the record of this photo, choose Delete. NOTE: Choosing Delete only removes
the photo record, not the actual photo or corresponding thumbnail. To show how this photo will look to the public, choose Test.
Delete selected To delete multiple photos at once, check the boxes next to the photos to be deleted, then click the "Delete selected" button at the bottom of the screen.
Convert to Headstones To convert any of the displayed photos to "headstones", check the boxes next to the photos to be converted, then click the "Convert to Headstones"
button at the bottom of the screen. The photo(s) will be moved to the Headstones folder, and the records will be moved to the Headstones tables.
Convert to Documents To convert any of the displayed photos to "documents", check the boxes next to the photos to be converted, then click the "Convert to Documents"
button at the bottom of the screen..
Sort Photos for [ID:Name]
To affect the order in which thumbnails are displayed for an individual, family or source, enter a numeric value next to each thumbnail or click on the arrows to move the photos dynamically.
Lower numbers sort first, and you may use decimals to insert one photo between two others if convenient. For example, if you have 50 photos and want to move number
50 to the number 10 slot, you could change 50 to 9.5 and update the list. When the list redisplays, the photos will be renumbered in the new order. To use a particular photo
as the default for this individual, family or source (displayed on the pedigree chart and at the top of all pages related to this individual, or at the top of the family group sheet for families),
click the button labeled "Make Default" in the row for that photo.
To save changes and redisplay according to the new sort order, click Update. To save changes and exit, click Finish.
This option allows you to make the first photo for each individual, family and source be that entity's "default" photo (the one displayed on pedigree charts, family group sheets,
and at the top of other pages assigned to that entity). The assignment can be made for all individuals, families and sources in a particular tree by selecting that tree
from the dropdown box. Check the box labeled "Override existing defaults" to set defaults regardless of what has previously been set. Leaving this box unchecked allows
previously set defaults to remain.
