Tānsi, Edlánet’e, Greetings from the Tribal Office!
I am practicing some Dene. Sometimes, as in all things, the home stretch in an agreement can give pause for thought. As you are quite aware, we are now finalizing the Governance Agreement, MLFNs Framework Agreement respecting Lands, Resources and Economic Development, Tripartite Governance Agreement, and continually negotiating on the Non-Resident Citizens Framing Agreement, Finance Arrangement Agreement. There is a lot of work in the communities on the Traditional Territories Mapping. It is important to work as a collective in this area.
Some of the questions that have been asked by membership are: how will these agreements work? Is it going to impact our Treaties? Will the fiscal responsibility of the Federal Government continue with this agreement? These are all very important questions to ask. It is of vital importance that we fully understand the Agreements and be able to make informed decisions. I urge all members to ask questions and attend informational sessions as well as seek to understand the Agreements as much as possible.
Each community has Governance Committee along with Coordinators who will be able to answer these questions. Their roles are vital to the process because these are the grassroots people that know their communities the best. Information sessions are also continuing and have been very helpful. These have also been scheduled with the assistance of legal representatives who having working knowledge of these Agreements.
More information on Ratification will be made available as the negotiations proceed. We need to be able to make an informed choice. We are after an educated vote.
